Twitter Strategy Versus Twitter Tactics

More often than not people confuse strategy with tactics, so it stands to reason many people confuse Twitter strategy with Twitter tactics as well.

The difference between strategy and tactics is that while strategy asks why, tactics ask how.  Strategy involves the overall plan, while tactics , on the other hand, are actions taken to reach certain specific objectives.  In other words, tactics are the means by which strategies are executed.

So, what does all this have to do with Twitter?  You may feel that you’re spending much too much time on Twitter and not really getting anywhere.  It doesn’t mean you’re a loser.  It  just means that maybe you have the wrong strategy.

Seth Godin, more than two years ago, said, “it takes real guts to abandon a strategy, especially if you’ve gotten super good at the tactics.

So, to benefit from Twitter, you need to ask yourself why you’re using it in the first place.  What is your Twitter strategy and what are the Twitter tactics you will need to implement your Twitter strategy to ultimately reach your Twitter goals?

Forget 140 characters!  My Twitter strategy of the moment can be summed up in just one word.  That word is integration, which can be achieved by combining several Twitter tactics:

First, there’s the obvious tactic of integrating your blog and Twitter.  Simply write your blog post and promote it on Twitter by tweeting a link. This one is so obvious that it’s been said that if you’re on Twitter and don’t have a business blog, you’re missing the ultimate opportunity to attract traffic to your website.

The next tactic is not quite so obvious, namely the integration of Twitter with your other social media sites.  It doesn’t take rocket science to integrate Twitter with Facebook.  In fact, it’s actually quite easy to publish your Twitter updates on Facebook, or if you prefer, vice versa. So add me as a friend on Facebook, and you’ll get my local, Houston Twitter updates, @HoustonChirps, right in Facebook.  I also have an SEO Twitter account, @HerbFirestone, with updates publishing directly to my Plaxo page.

Please feel free to comment or add other ways to integrate one’s social media sites.
